A chlorine generator uses common table salt to produce all the chlorine a pool needs, safely, effectively and automatically. It provides the same sanitation as regular chlorine sticks or tablets. However, improper care of your pool and/or your salt system can cause major issues. It’s important to remember to clean your salt cell about every three months or so in order to maintain proper functionality and to preserve the life of the cell. It’s important to clean the cell even if you don’t see much, or any, scale build-up upon inspecting.

To clean your salt system:

  1. Turn off equipment and close valve.
  2. Remove cable.
  3. Remove the couplings on the top and bottom of the cell and remove the cell.
  4. Cap off the bottom of the cell (most manufacturers have caps available for cleaning).
  5. Stand cell upright in a bucket.
  6. Pour Cell Cleaner directly into the salt cell. (Do not submerge cell into the cleaner.)
  7. Leave acid in the cell for about 15-20 minutes.
  8. Carefully pick up the cell and dump out Cell Cleaner. (You can pour directly into the pool.)
  9. Remove the cap from the bottom of the cell.
  10. Spray cell out thoroughly with a garden hose.
  11. Reattach cell and cord.
  12. Turn equipment back on.

And that’s it! Remember to bring in a sample after cleaning the cell. If you have any trouble, cleaning the cell or if you are uncomfortable doing it on your own, please give us a call to set up a service call!
