Algae blooms happen to even the most experienced pool owner from time-to-time. But where does it come from? Unlike most plant life, algae does not grow from seeds, but from spores. Those spores are, unfortunately, all around us, looking for the ideal place to settle and grow. The ideal real estate for these spores is warm water. With our sub-tropical climate, algae can pop up anytime from around March until almost Thanksgiving sometimes! Algae can grow in your pool’s water any time the water reaches a temperature of 70 degrees or more. It’s important to consistently use a preventative algaecide and maintain a chlorine reading of 1-3ppm. It’s also recommended to “shock” your pool after a bad rainstorm or after a big pool party. If you need help with preventative maintenance, feel free to ask any of our pool care professionals what the best routine for your pool is. As always, the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” rings true!
